Can we get porn here?
That's what a student asked me today!
She was checking out some DVDs, and she said "Hey, is it true we can get porn here?"
I honestly misheard this as "popcorn", and thought she was asking about the free movie nights on campus where free popcorn is indeed served. But I didn't know why she'd be asking the librarian about that (although I was fielding all kinds of non-library questions today, the first day of class), so I said "I'm sorry, can you get what?"
"Porn. I mean, not for me, someone just said we can get like some French porn movies from the library."
"Uh, not that I know of...I mean, we do have some French movies, and we've got R-rated movies, but I don't think we have any actual porn."
"Oh, okay. Well, that's just what I heard."
I just barely managed to keep myself from saying "No, that's why we have INTERNET, silly!"

At least they came and asked the reference librarian. It may have been an odd question but they did ask!

The rumor must have originated from somewhere. Maybe you have some French movie that looks like pr0n to someone who has never seen the Internet.
The only French movie I know that we have is The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and I think you'd have to be pretty sheltered to consider that pornographic. I mean like so sheltered you think the Amish are debauched libertines.
However, a student did come in today to check out a DVD titled Erotique, so maybe that's what's at the bottom of this rumor. Looking at the IMDB entry, this appears to be neither French nor porn, but it has a French title and it is about sex.
I'm still pretty sure you could find better stuff on the Internet, though.
Interestingly, I checked a movie out from my undergrad library that I can only describe as porn. However, I was not looking for porn, I just wound up with it. It was called L'Empire des sens. It was arty and in French, but still porn. Maybe this is the movie?
Checking out catalog I see we DO have L'Empire des sens/In the realm of the senses...but only on VHS. So odds are good anyone wanting to enjoy some porn from the library would have to watch it at the viewing stations IN the library.
Looking at the IMDB entry, I see this is actually a Japanese film that is best known by its French title because it was the French release that was really dirty. The original US release edited out some material. I'm not sure which one we have here.
But again, if I were a student given the choice between watching 1970s Japanese art porn on a VHS player in the library periodicals room and just looking on the Internet...I think I'd have to go with the Internet.
Not to belabor the point, but maybe the student was just curious about the idea of school sanctioned porn - I certainly was surprised!
Well, she did say she was asking "not for me", but I kind of took that to mean "it is for me". ;)
Just when I was worried that the blog was dying out. I should have known that a good porn post would bring everyone back.
