Exercise opportunity

Would you be interested in playing IM soccer? My friend Andrew (a Chemistry PhD student) organizes a co-ed team and said, "we are desperate for women." (They had 5 but lost 2 due to scheduling problems - need 3 on the field at a time because it is 7 v 7.)

According to Andrew, "We are a for-fun team, and have a variety of skill levels on the team. We play on Tuesdays at 6:30 [p.m.]" on the University Bay Fields (out by Picnic Point and the Waisman Center).

(I don't think they're will be a game next week, though, since that's July 4th.)

Holla at me if you're interested so I can get you connected with Andrew and his Chem buddies. (Maybe a good chance to meet some non-SLIS guys in addition to getting a workout??) I'm thinking about playing despite being ridiculously out of shape and relatively clueless about soccer strategy, and I'd love to have some more of my favorite bitches come and play with me!

noooooooooo! part deux

Enough! I have had it up-to-here with the skinny jean craze! They are impractical, unflattering and overall, just plain ridiculous. Hear that, United Kingdom? Stop trying to infiltrate our street fashion! Clothing retailers--it's time for you to rally against the ugly! No more skinnies on your shelves, please!

I can't take it any more! I encountered a sight on my walk home from work yesterday that no one should have to endure. Picture it: two hipster boys in vintage indie rock t-shirts and shaggy hair--okay so far, but you have to look out for what the Fugs have termed "the scroll down." I noticed that the hipsters' gait was kind of funny, so I scrolled down to see one of the biggest fashion mistakes ever: low-slung skinny jeans. The jeans were skinny--skin-tight skinny-mini--and these misguided wannabe rocksters were both sporting the jean waists at mid-ass level! More than half of their underwear was visible! The weirdest and worst hip-hop-slash-hipster street style I've ever encountered. And it wasn't just an aesthetic faux-pas! The combination of tight and low worked to constrict their leg movements, causing the hipsters to WADDLE. Like ducks. Or penguins, if you're into that. It was awful and probably dangerous, either way you look at it.

Please, dear readers, just say no to the skinny. Before someone gets hurt.

This fashion editorial has been brought to you by 20th Century Fox's "The Devil Wears Prada," in theaters on Friday.

Article on ALA convention in New Orleans

I found this article online and thought it was pretty nice (except for the box blocking the text at the top that I couldn't make go away).

Camping

I think we unofficially decided on July 22nd as our summer camping weekend but I wanted to check and see if that still worked for people. I also wanted to mention that I have a camper that can sleep 6 comfortably. So any takers for another SLIS camping trip?

Bronze Book Cart

Our team took third place (and won the wee bronze book cart) at the championship.

The grand prize went to the team from Tulane, and they earned it. And I don't mean that in a pitying "Oh, that poor team from New Orleans" way. They were really good.

Walking...tomorrow?

Hey guys, I have to work on a presentation with Jamie tonight but was wondering if anybody would be up for walking tomorrow. We could walk outside if it's not raining or at the SERF if it's icky. Any takers? Any preference of outside routes (though I doubt the weather will be nice enough)?

More NOLA

Conference in full swing. Annie and Katie arrived safely last night. Scored much free stuff in exhibition hall. Met Neil Gaiman (briefly) at book signing. Waited in line too long to use Internet. Book cart drill team is tomorrow!

NOLA ALA

Last night the librarians stormed The French Quarter. Everyone all over town seemed happy to see us. We took turns playing the washboard with a zydeco band on Bourbon Street. My ears are still ringing!

It's over!

I know you guys haven't necessarily been as enthralled by this as I have...meh, check it out anyway.

some random highlights

Prague was really beautiful--so beautiful, in fact, that we shouldn't have spent any of our time checking email or watching Tom Cruise action flicks. Our bad!

Czech "cuisine," unfortunately, was not so beautiful and it tasted even worse. If it had taste at all (note the liberal portion of pepper on the potato dumplings...ooooh, the dumplings still haunt me).

Yee-ah. Communism museum gift shop. I stopped grinning like the evil doll after realizing that said evil dolls were not for sale.

Heli-pad at the Usti hospital. A definite must-see. Annie and Katie failed to note the significance.

Hint hint

My birthday is September 12...

Anyone need a passenger?

Is anyone going to or near the Twin Cities on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and need a passenger? I'll pay you! Pretty please?

Prague was beautiful !

Thus began our journey into Prague's seedy underbelly. It involved skater boiz, three guys called Bobem, Bobek, and Bobub, and a little hideaway codenamed Orange Moon . Don't worry though, if you love it, there is no problem!

A little favor?

Is anyone on campus today? If so... could you be a peach and pick up a t shirt for me at the CIMC!? Pretty please with sugar on top!!? Lemme know if there are any takers on this fabulous errand running offer, I will repay your kindness with the cold beverage of your choice next time we're out.

Lexis-Nexis breakfast at ALA

Just wanted to remind anyone interested in attending the Lexis-Nexis breakfast at ALA on Monday, June 26, that you need to RSVP by tomorrow (6/15).

Here's the link:

36th Annual LexisNexis(R) Breakfast

I need wheels

I've been thinking about getting a car of my own for a while. I've been thinking about it a lot more since my mother's junker second car, which I sometimes borrowed, had to go to Car Heaven.

Does anyone know anyone with a decent but CHEAP car they're looking to sell? I don't care if it's old or ugly, I just want something in reasonably good condition and that isn't a total gas hog.

Any advice on buying a used car locally is also welcome.

Library graffiti

I saw this morning that someone has spray painted "I [Heart] Libraries" on the sidewalk outside College Library, behind the parking garage entrance.

Even our local vandals are pro-library!

Thursday Night Happy Hour

Before school ended, a few of us talked about starting a SLIS summer happy hour on Thursdays at the Flat Iron. I'll be there at 6pm this Thursday, hopefully outside on the patio so come join me if you are in town.

dumplings and magnetic resonance images

Oh my god, yäll! First off, here is the menu from our last night of class in CyechÖ
Pivo )beer)
Soup
Bread
Bread dumplings AND
Potato dumplings
Pork
Ham
Bologna meatloaf )for real)
More Pivo

Seriouslz, our last dazs of class were a total adventure! On Thursdaz we all got on the wrong bus or something and ended up at a hospital in Usti, just a few kilos from the Deutschland border. The nice czech people at the hospital must have thought were were nursing students or something...thez acted a little surprised when we didnät jump up and down at the prospect of viewing the MRI room but showed it to us anzwaz! The highlight of the hospital tour included the MRI room with an exclusive viewing of naked, old czech men! We also saw the lobbz, where thez sell cigarettz, the helißpad, the medical librarz, all while this nurse-photographer was taking our picture like we were Brangelina spawn! We ended up back in Prague relativelz unscathed, but our bird flu test results havenät come back zet. It was totallz the worst time we ever got lost in Bohemia.

Look forward to Annie and Katieäs return as thez are now in the middle of their 19 hour journez back home.

The sad story of my stolen bag may have a happy ending

I don't think I can do the full story justice in this format, but since I originally posted my tale of woe here I wanted to make an update.

Thanks to a combination of the hard work of the police, the alertness of the library staff, and my own detective work, most of my stolen stuff has been recovered. No sign of my camera yet, but I have some hope even for that because...

As of this evening, the police have a suspect in custody!

Drinks?

Does any one want to go out for drinks this week?
Someplace downtown or relatively nearby?

Monday, June 05, 2006

the delights just won't stop

Um, so all y'all are going to think that we didn't do anything except look at libraries, drink pivo and eat the local "delights." But it's just not true! We also saw Mission Impossible III last night, so there!

The real reason for this post, however, is to describe yet another culinary adventure in meat and potatoes. Lunch today was roast beef and bread/roll dumplings covered in yellow gravy topped with...the best part: WHIPPED CREAM AND CRANBERRIES. I didn't understand the combo and just drank as much mulled wined (horky vino) as the waitresses would bring me.

Peace out, bitches.

It's all for you Damien...

Anyone up for seeing the movie this Tuesday? We were going to try and buy tickets in advance. Probably won't sell out, but better safe. It's showing at Point Cinema on Mineral Point Rd by the beltline at 7:30. I think that's the closest theater. We could carpool, that way you don't have to walk to your car by yourself after the movie when it's dark and your car seems to be the only one in the lot and you think you hear something behind you... I am not sleeping alone this week.

Ugh

It's not enough to have a small hangover on a sunny Friday morning, I want to make myself thoroughly depressed and mad too. (Hell yes I get my news from Rolling Stone!)
